What is a demerit?
Think of demerits like points. Demerits are assigned when you receive assertive discipline such as an after-school detention, Saturday school, or suspension. If a student accumulates 15 or more demerits in the first semester or 20 or more demerits in the second semester, you are ineligible.
Demerits are accrued in the following ways:
In-House Detention (IHD) = 1
Class Suspension = 1
After School Detention = 1
No Show Detention = 2
In House Suspension (IHS)/Lockdown = 2
Suspension = 3/day
Dress Code Violation = 1
Personal Electronic Device (PED) Violation = 1
Saturday School= 2
There are various ways students can earn merits back. For example, a student is nominated for BIONIC or student of the week they earn merits. Another way to earn merits is by setting up a community service plan with your assistant principal. See the attached document for a full list of ways to earn merits. Our goal is to improve your academic success by encouraging good behavior. If you are interested in earning merits schedule a meeting in the office with one of the assistant principals.
