PERSONAL STATEMENTS THAT WORK!

As college application time begins again, CSF would like to share a resource for personal statement essays!
Every year, Johns Hopkins University publishes sample "Essays that Worked" to help potential applicants (to their university, or to any other) understand what admission directors are looking for in a personal statement.Here is the link to the website. On this site, there are also tips on what to think about as you start writing essays for college -- for example, focusing on conveying the sort of person you are, rather than listing accomplishments.
Remember, though, colleges are often looking for slightly different things in the personal statements that they require, so be sure to do some research on the colleges that you are looking at applying to. Destination College is an amazing resource here at Vaca High -- the advisors often read UC application essays -- and so be sure to stop by to talk to them if you are applying to colleges this fall.

RECOGNIZING AP SCHOLARS

Last November, CSF hosted a luncheon/recognition ceremony for AP Scholar award winners. Letterman's patches and certificates (and pizza!) were awarded to kids who earned any of the four levels of AP Scholar awards: AP Scholar, AP Scholar with Honor, AP Scholar with Distinction, and National AP Scholar. To receive a regular AP Scholar award, kids must earn a three or higher on three or more AP exams. To earn an AP Scholar with Honor award, kids must receive an average score of at least 3.25, and earn a three or higher on four or more AP exams. To earn an AP Scholar with Distinction award, kids must earn an average score of at least 3.5, and earn a three or higher on five or more AP exams. To earn an National AP Scholar Award, kids must earn an average score of at least 4, and earn a three or higher on eight or more AP exams. In the 2017 AP testing season, Vaca High had 33 AP Scholars, 13 AP Scholars with Honor, 19 AP Scholars with Distinction, and 2 National AP Scholars -- a total of 67 AP Scholars. However, many of the kids who earned the awards were seniors when they took the qualifying tests, and so had already graduated before the luncheon took place. Because of this, the kids recognized at the lunchtime ceremony were only the students who earned AP awards through their junior year AP tests. Congratulations to AP Scholars Holly Anderson, Matthew Andrachek, Alyssa Barling, Anna Gagnabin, Christopher Johnston, Corey Kato, Isabella Mediati, Corinne Reece, and Connor Zwick and AP Scholars with Honor Gordon Bridge, Duncan Koelzer and Madison Thomas!

Yeah, SATs Matter
It's March and many of our Juniors are taking their first SAT test. A recent article in the Wall Street Journal "The Truth About the SAT and ACT" argues that SAT and ACT tests are still relevant, despite the many myths surrounding their relative usefulness. SAT and ACT tests are one of the ways that colleges sort kids into "pools" to decide who is the best fit for their college, since these tests can provide a prediction of how well the test takers will perform in college. Although this article claims that traditional test prep classes are unhelpful and expensive, it offers an alternative option: Khan Academy SAT Prep. Three years ago, Khan Academy partnered with College Board to create a free SAT Prep course, complete with practice exercises and full exams. This service allows kids to get used to the format of the SAT test and to become familiar with the topics addressed in the test, and prepare for the actual exam using College Board's study plans. In September, CSF is hosting "Ready - SAT - Go," a SAT study group using Khan Academy resources and College Board's study group planning schedule. Come join us to help yourself prepare for the fall SAT and PSAT!
