Mission Statement:
"AVID’s mission is to close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college and career readiness
and success in a global society."
What Does College and Career Readiness Mean?
No matter what path high school graduates choose, students must develop specific essential skills to design their futures: Writing, Inquiry (critical thinking), Collaboration, Organization, Reading, and Relationship building. The development of these skills is rooted in self-belief. If students believe they are capable, there is a foundational confidence to learn and a resiliency to overcome setbacks.
Many first-generation high school or college students don't often have the opportunity to develop all these skills outside or at home. AVID believes that regardless of a student's background, ALL STUDENTS CAN EXCEL!!
What is AVID?
AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. AVID is a four-year elective college readiness program where a teacher supports and mentors students to build these skills. We do this through field trips, projects, essays, and team-building activities. During the four years, AVID provides parents with more knowledge about how college & career readiness can benefit their students and how the college application process works.
How does AVID support students?
AVID students receive support and mentoring in three major areas that help them become confident individuals who can successfully navigate life and career:
- Rigorous Academic Preparedness: develop academic skills and complete rigorous college and career preparatory curriculum
- Opportunity Knowledge: Research opportunities and goal setting that support their long-term aspirations
- Student Agency: learn to build relationships, persist through obstacles, and activate their academic, social, emotional, and professional knowledge and skills to reach their potential
- AVID is NOT a study hall and DOES NOT provide tutoring support.
What does our AVID Site Team do?
Teachers and other adults on a school campus play an essential role in student success. All staff and community members are welcome to participate in our meetings. To bring about this transformation, members:
- Insist on Rigor for our students.
- Break down barriers
- Align the vision of AVID in their courses
- Advocate for students
